Blog: goat, farm, soap, herb, a business

Our blog gives a glimpse at our farm. We make goat milk soap and goat milk lotion in small batches. We are a micro farm, hand-milking a goat and using her milk in our products. We wildcraft plants to use in our products. We source local ingredients when we can and support small local businesses for many of our products. We hope you support small farms!

20 Reason Why Goats Make Good Hiking Buddies

I love hiking with my goats. It is definitely one of my favorite things to do. I like the companionship (very similar to hiking with a dog). Some goats may need a little training to jump or walk through a creek and to be on a lead rope at times. If your goats are not hiking with packs there is not much to it. If you want to hike with a pack it is good to start off when they are young. I use an empty dog backpack and put that on their backs when they are a couple of months old.

1.      They go with you wherever you walk

2.      They stay close

3.      They are quiet and peaceful to walk with

4.      They will stay on the trail

5.      They encourage you to walk farther

6.      They can carry your things

7.      If you hike at a quick pace, the goats can keep up

8.      If you stop for a rest, the goats will stop too

9.      The goats will nibble on stuff, but won’t stop and eat for too long

10.   They usually will go anywhere

11.   They will stop and tell you if they notice something is wrong (i.e. another animal or hiker)

12.   They will wait for you if you lag behind

13.   They sometimes help you find the trail if you get off course

14.   If you slip you can use them for support

15.   They seem to really enjoy it

16.   They smell things – one of my goats found a deer antler shed last year

17.   They are light on the soil

18.   Sometimes they come when they are called

19.   It is fun to watch the little goats climb on low objects like small rocks and logs

20.   It is very relaxing to listen to them chew on dried leaves and plants
